DAY 1

San Jose, Costa Rica

Welcome to San Jose, Costa Rica!

We will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel. You can explore the capital city with its theaters, museums, historic buildings and beautiful parks. Alternatively, simply sit in a café and enjoy a cup of Costa Rican coffee while you watch the daily life of the “Ticos”

DAY 2

SAN JOSE – ARENAL VOLCANO (3 HOURS APROX.) 138 KMS

Breakfast in the hotel.

Shuttle transfer in the morning to the Arenal Volcano or your 4×4 rental car will be delivered to you at the hotel.

Today you go to the Northern Plains region, home of the impressive and grand Arenal Volcano, one of the country’s natural wonders. Along your journey to the town of La Fortuna, at the base of the volcano, you will see agricultural plantations, large ornamental plant nurseries, and cattle farms.

DAY 3

ARENAL VOLCANO

This morning you will hike the Lava Flow 2010 Trail, a two-kilometer journey through the rainforest at the foot of the Arenal Volcano.You will be able to observe an incredible amount of flora and fauna that abound in the area. The hike will take you up to 620 meters (2,034 feet), the highest point where you can see the lava flows from 1975 to 2010.The views are impressive of the majestic volcano and Lake Arenal at your feet – definitelyan unforgettable landscape!

DAY 4

ARENAL VOLCANO

The view of the Arenal Volcano is breathtaking from the hotel’s suites, letting you appreciate this natural gift to Costa Rica. DAY 5

ARENAL VOLCANO – MONTEVERDE (2.5 HOURS APROX.) 120KMS

Your next destination is the Monteverde cloud forest, a small community located at the top of the Tilaran Mountain Range and an important ecotourism destination in Costa Rica.The main attraction is the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve.

For the trip between Arenal and Monteverde, you will go by vehicle to Lake Arenal, and then you will board a boat that will take you to the other side of the lake (about one hour). This service is the fastest and one of the most attractive ways to travel, letting you admire beautiful views of all the mountains, open sky, and the colossal Arenal Volcano on your way across the lake.

When you reach the other side of the lake, you will be picked up and driven to your hotel in Monteverde. You will have the afternoon free to enjoy your hotel’s facilities.

Note: Customers with a rental car must travel on their own to Monteverde around the lake.

DAY 6

MONTEVERDE

Monteverde is world-renowned for its cloud forest that straddles the Continental Divide. You will be amazed by the diversity and richness of nature in the area walking along trails in the nature reserves. In the highest parts of the forest, there is what is called “natural Elfin forest” (the climate is such that the tallest trees do not exceed 10 meters).

Explore the Monteverde Cloud Forest while you traverse various trails and a series of suspension bridges at different levels of a wonderfully diverse ecosystem. You’ll cross suspension bridges with full views of the forest canopy, and from the forest floor along well-maintained nature trails, a naturalist guide will point out intriguing plant and animal life.

Complement your day with a visit to the Monteverde Butterfly Garden and also learn about the insects and arachnids of Costa Rica that will make you change the way people think about these little and misunderstood creatures. This garden offers you up to 30 species of butterflies in 4 different habitats and more than 20 species of insects and arachnids alive in our natural center.

DAY 7

MONTEVERDE

Today you will go on the Don Juan Coffee, Sugar Cane, & Chocolate Tour. Your journey begins with an introduction to the lifecycle of a coffee plant, starting with the coffee seed and following its fascinating evolutionary cycle. You will receive a brief overview of the wonderful world of coffee, followed by the history of Costa Rican coffee and its importance in socio-economic development.

Halfway through the tour, you will visit the famous sugar mill, called a “trapiche” in Spanish, where you will enjoy one of the most important products of our land, sugar cane.

Then, you will learn all about how delicious chocolate is made,from the seeds of the Theobroma cacao, or cocoa tree, to its processinginto the derivations that we know today: dark, white, and milk chocolate, or combined with fruits.You also will learn about cacao’s medicinal functions in the popular cocoa butter.

DAY 8

MONTEVERDE – MANUEL ANTONIO (3.5 HOURS APROX.) 189KMS

Manuel Antonio is your next destination. It is home to the smallest but most visited national park in Costa Rica. The lush landscape along the central Pacific coast features rice and palm plantations.During your trip, be sure to stop at the Tarcoles River Bridge to see the giant crocodiles in their habitat.

DAY 9

MANUEL ANTONIO

Manuel Antonio National Park is one of the most beautiful parks in Costa Rica. On this tour, you will visit pristine beaches with coral reefs bordered by lush vegetation and the natural wonders of the rainforest. Manuel Antonio’s beaches are regarded as some of the best in Costa Rica.

Along the trails, you will have the possibility to see sloths and numerous species of monkeys traveling through the treetops, anteaters, iguanas resting in the tropical jungle, and listen to the singing of various birds.

DAY 12

MANUEL ANTONIO – AIRPORT (2.5 HOURS APROX.) 154KMS

Today you depart to the Juan Santamaria International Airport in San Jose. Please note that you must be at the airport three hours before your flight departs. Your shuttle transportation will pick you up to arrive on time.

Your flight must depart no earlier than 4:00 p.m. If your flight leaves earlier, you must add a night in San Jose or leave the hotel very early. From the Manuel Antonio hotel to the airport, it will take about four hours.

Rental cars must be returned to the agency office near the airport. The rental car company will transfer you to the airport.
